design as democracy - Balancing between theory and practice
A Theoretical Reflection on the Correlation Between Design and Democracy
Description
How does democratic design express itself and what does this have to do with the responsibility of designers? The thesis contributes to the discussion on the concepts of democracy and design by characterising the concept of ‘design as democracy’ and exploring it through a participatory design event and interviews. It does not attempt to create a model for ‘design as democracy’, but rather to show the tensions within which its realisation is possible. It formulates an idea of democracy as design that encourages designers to reflect on design processes, to engage in conflict and to question design decisions. The work does not offer instructions, but rather stimulates the idea of an ongoing process that also locates design for the future where it is effective: In society. The work was presented as an interactive exhibition.
