Description

When items are handed in to recycling centres, functional or easily repairable items are often scrapped prematurely. This premature disposal contributes to the disproportionate distribution of production costs over useful life. The rescue of such items by recycling centres is therefore sensible, but rare. ‘Dauerschleife’ aims to change this. It automates the process of identifying discarded items using 3D scanning, object recognition and AI. Discarded objects are recognised in three dimensions and the AI checks whether they can be reused. By creating three-dimensional copies, the objects can be sold both online and physically at a central location in the city. The point of sale acts as both a shop and a warehouse. This novel approach helps to extend the life cycle of things and reduce waste, while promoting alternatives to new goods.
