Caring Forestry – Shaping the Forest through Care

Caring Forestry understands forestry as a practice of care and the relationship between humans and forests as a process that can be shaped. Two interventions show how careful interventions open up new perspectives: The Rubus Spinner transforms blackberry branches that overgrow young trees into protection against browsing. In this way, the disruptive becomes the protective, and care is combined with transformation. The second intervention, the habitat tree orthosis, questions sustainable wood extraction.

A steel construction anchors felled tree crowns back onto the stump so that they remain standing deadwood and thus a habitat for birds, fungi, and insects. Both tools link forestry work with design and propose a practice that combines ecological responsibility and care – as an expression of a respectful handling of the forest as a natural and cultural space.
