Description

The lamp family “Brick Lamps” combines different typologies of lamps with the industrial production process of clay-pressmolding. This unlikely match of material and object aims to show that through the use of production-specific design, the efficiency of industrial production in combination with the use of materials like clay can help revive local production while keeping modern standards of sustainability in mind.

In the course of the project I worked with a former brickworks in rural Brandenburg, to source raw material and find out more about the history and the green future of clay-pressmolding and -burning, while learning more about what kind of designs this process could reliably produce. Using this, a small scale production process was developed, which made the production of the lamps feasible in the context of the Uni-workshop.

The accompanying thesis explores how the deliberate design for local production techniques positively impacts the social fabric of communities.
