We use smartphones every day, but we often lose track of why we use them at all. Algorithms and interfaces are deliberately designed to keep us longer and make us return again and again. Technology no longer serves us, but we serve it.

ASTRO questions this dependency. The device was developed by examining the real needs of users. Interviews with school students, university students, parents, and teachers showed that people want control over their technology use.

The result is a modular system. Users consciously choose which functions they need: telephone, camera, navigation. Haptic operation through buttons and dials makes every use intentional and tangible. Without notifications and a touchscreen, users are no longer distracted.

Design with purpose is shown in clear solutions. The original purpose remains visible. Users can thus decide more consciously whether and how they use technology.
