Description

How can algorithms be used in the design process in such a way that the designer retains control over the quality of the results, while allowing the computer to reveal additional possibilities? A new design process has been formulated to address the challenges of working with generative tools. This allows a qualitative output with a targeted qualitative input and the possibility of fine tuning.  In an experiment, an algorithm was used to generate new patterns in a similar style by inputting the graphic pattern in ‘Wall Hanging 1926’ by textile artist Anni Albers. One of these patterns was selected to be materially represented in this tapestry. The tapestry is hand woven on a loom using cotton and virgin wool. It has been shown that the use of algorithms in the design process not only provides clarity, but can even open up new creative possibilities.
