About Slag
Transforming postnatural material
Description
Around seven million tonnes of blast furnace slag is produced each year in Germany as a secondary mineral product from metal production. To date, the majority of this has been used as a filler in linear applications in the construction industry.
About Slag presents various objects that demonstrate alternative and circular uses of slag by using the complex material to produce a glass mass and then processing it in various ways. This step not only transforms the slag into a formally controllable and recyclable state, but also substitutes valuable chemicals and saves energy in glass production. The close exchange with engineers and craftsmen has led to a dialogue between industry and trade. The results demonstrate the scalability of the processes tested and show that slag as a glass component is a resource-saving alternative.
