A Pixel’s Story
Gestaltung eines Videospiels zur Geschichte der Pixelgrafik in Videospielen von Helena Emilia Heide Löschner
Description
In my project ‘A Pixel’s Story’, I explore the history of pixel graphics in video games – from the 1970s to the present, divided into early stages, 8-bit, 16-bit and Hi-Bit. The focus is on the graphic development and its impact. Pixel graphics are characterised by the visibility of individual pixels. In addition to technical aspects, I also examine social and media-related reasons for their popularity – such as nostalgia, cozy games, indie games and escapism. My game combines classic pixel graphics with the relaxing style of modern cozy games. The levels are based on historical models and include museum levels for educational purposes. Currently, the game covers phases up to 16-bit, with a perspective on Hi-Bit. The aim is to make the history of pixel graphics tangible through gameplay, convey knowledge via gamification and promote interest in video game history.
