Between Emptiness and Meaning – An Interpretation of Japanese Aesthetic Principles explores how aesthetics shape perception and how design can have an impact beyond the visible. At its core is the Japanese concept of Ma, which describes the intentional space between elements. Emptiness is understood not as absence, but as an active component of meaning.

Based on this theoretical exploration, a workshop for design students was developed to make Japanese aesthetics tangible. Through observation, composition exercises and reflection, participants learn to use emptiness as a deliberate design tool.

The project is realised as a modular workshop toolkit consisting of a box system and a workbook. Premium Gmund paper and consistent engraved details emphasise materiality, tactility and reduction. The project brings together theory, design and education, making aesthetics directly experienceable.
