How can the engagement with historical stained glass provide innovative impulses for contemporary design practice? Following this guiding question, historical literature, digital collections, and interviews with experts were evaluated, and design principles of stained glass were extracted. A lively working archive and a theoretical thesis document these processes. In addition, a luminaire acts as a demonstrator. Cut-out aluminum profiles form the body and clamp glass plates. These are printed on both sides with industrial enamel colors, with patterns hand-scratched into the paint layer. In natural light, only the front paint layer is visible. When the internal LED is switched on, the front and back overlap, and the patterns combine to form an overall picture. In the combination of artisanal and industrial techniques, new design possibilities open up that neither of the two fields could bring forth alone.
