Description
The growing fashion industry leads to massive environmental pollution caused by textile waste, of which only about 1% is used for textile-to-textile recycling. Innovative approaches to the reuse of textile fibres are urgently needed to conserve resources and reduce environmental impact.
This project therefore developed Texterra: an innovative material made from old textile fibres and a natural maize-based binder. Texterra resembles artificial leather in thinner material thicknesses and plastic in thicker versions.
The fibre material can be processed using various production methods – such as mould pressing, laser cutting, or extrusion – and therefore offers versatile applications in the design sector. The developed material is produced using a simple, energy-efficient process and is fully recyclable. An important contribution to the circular economy.
