Description

It is a virtual reality installation for the exhibition "Moderne am Main 1919–1933" (Open: January 19 – April 14, 2019) at the Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt. The VR installation was the prologue to the exhibition and allowed visitors to immerse themselves virtually in the network of "Neues Frankfurt".

What is the Topic?

In the years of 1919-1933 Frankfurt am Main developed into a center of modern design. A large network of actors in the fields of architecture, design, art, economy and politics developed new forms for all areas of life. They all worked together on a contemporary culture to shape a modern urban society with the help of industrialization.

Why does it look like this?

The practical diploma thesis deals with the intersection of analogue and digital worlds of experience in exhibition design. The Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt made the contents available for the exhibition "Moderne am Main 1919–1933" for the development of an exhibition concept. The aim was to give an insight into the complex relationships of the network of "Moderne am Main". During the examination of the content of the network of actors, a two-dimensional mind map emerged. Out of the confusion and the amount of data, the concept for walking the network in virtual space using VRglasses was developed.

What is special?

With virtual reality glasses, visitors can immerse themselves in the virtual world and become part of the network themselves. The virtual space becomes a playground and opens up the possibility for a self-guided expedition through the history and network of "Neues Frankfurt". Visitors can search for clues and individually decide about which nodes of the network they want to retrieve further information. The visitors receive information on historical backgrounds, architecture, design and the actors of "Neues Frankfurt". Through the visual and acoustic support, the information conveyed remains permanently anchored with the visitors and becomes an experience. In this way the participants themselves become part of the search for traces – the virtual space becomes a lived history.

What is new?

The choice of the appropriate technology for the implementation of the diploma thesis resulted from the examination of the content topic. For me as a designer, it is important not to be afraid of new technologies and to explore the interfaces between technology, context and design. In my opinion, this is the only way to emerge innovative, new concepts and products.
