The thesis, created under the supervision of Prof. Nadine Göpfert and as part of the semester project ‘STAYING IN TOUCH – How do we feel in a dematerialized world?’, contrasts the new spirit of a digital world with humanity. On the one hand, this work explores the potential that AI and code as tools can offer to (textile) designers. On the other hand, it seeks to initiate a dialogue about how we want to interact with this AI in the future.
Specifically, 40 textile artefacts were created. Each artefact was crafted painstakingly by hand — crocheted, embroidered, and decorated — and represents a human emotion. In contrast, its design concept and detailed technical instructions (e.g., stitch counts) were generated by an AI called the Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, or GPT for short: Nervengestrüpp_01; OpenAI.
