Navigating Nature
Enhancing mindful experiences of nature through Wayfinding Design
Description
Navigating Nature addresses human disconnection from nature, which prevents us from recognising our existence within a relational web with other beings and the environment.
On an interconnected planet, designers are called to widen the boundaries of the field. The project explores how ecological awareness can be integrated into wayfinding design through mindfulness principles. The proposal is that wayfinding can evolve beyond efficiently guiding people to destinations (from point A to B), towards enhancing awareness of the journey itself. The journey is not about reaching a place, but about experiencing the phenomena that unfold in between.
Using literature review, research through design, and phenomenological methods, the project developed a conceptual framework for mindful wayfinding, applied in designing signs that incorporate sensorial experiences as landmarks.
This work commits to design that creates meaning rather than objects — design that nurtures our fundamental connection to the natural world.
