Description

In my Master’s project, I developed a customized bicycle saddle that combines comfort, health, and digital manufacturing. The core of the innovation is a scanning process I developed: A special material that changes color due to body heat is used on a dummy saddle. When testing the seat, a thermally generated impression of the individual pressure zones is created. This impression is captured optically and evaluated digitally, making the actual sitting position and pressure distribution directly visible on the bicycle.

Based on this data, the saddle surface is generated to customer specifications. The final product is a 3D-printed bicycle saddle manufactured using a linear printing process, which can be produced cost-effectively and directly on site. The process replaces the previously common search for the right saddle with a data-based, individual adjustment and offers a new solution, especially for health-related restrictions.
