Description

When this project began last spring, we had little knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence. We were unsure how, as designers, we could use AI meaningfully and searched for an approach to help us navigate this field.

We approached the topic through an exploratory, design-driven process. We observed how AI programs simplified the design process. But we asked ourselves: How can AI be used in a way that benefits society and the environment?
We summarised our experiences in a design method that describes how to deal with new technologies and helps us identify realistic potentials. To validate it, we applied the method and developed Amber: an AI-assisted monitoring device that helps foresters detect bark beetle infestations at an early stage. Attached to the tree, Amber uses microphones and AI analysis to detect beetles before they become externally visible, helping to protect our forests.
