Description
In this independent bachelor’s thesis, the complex topic of “dialect” was approached on a typographical level. Since dialects are losing significance, particularly among younger generations, the visualization of the sound diversity of my native dialect from the Ostallgäu region was intended to make the cultural and identity-forming value of vernacular visible.
Based on the question of how dialect can be represented in writing, new glyphs were developed from characteristic features. This was based on analyses of dialect literature as well as experimental abstractions of Latin glyphs through scanning processes.
The result is an interactive web application with animated glyphs, a dictionary, audio samples, and interviews. In addition, a RISO-printed, hand-bound booklet was created as a type specimen. Testings showed: The texts create deliberate reading pauses and promote listening behavior, making dialect experiential both digitally and analogously.
