What if furniture were not thought of as a throwaway product, but as part of a natural cycle? “fungi follows form” examines the potential of fungal mycelium as a sustainable alternative to conventional furniture materials in the context of fast furniture. The focus is on a living material that grows on organic waste materials, is completely compostable, and at the same time possesses a unique material aesthetic.

Through theoretical research, workshops, and own material experiments, different substrates, growth processes, and manufacturing procedures were investigated. Questions regarding stability, haptics, moldability, and design expression were the main focus.

The result is a modular spatial element made of fungal mycelium and hemp, which can be flexibly combined and versatilely used in interior design. The design shows how circular design, material research, and new forms of living can come together.
