Description

Not everyone has access to locally produced, fresh food. In addition, the current agricultural system is damaging to the environment, driving climate change and wasting precious resources. Pesticides and monocultures promote species extinction. In this thesis I am concerned with how one can counter this trend with urban farming concepts. Especially by designing an intelligent mushroom farm, I would like to develop an alternative to established urban farming methods. Growing mushrooms is one of the most sustainable ways to produce food and has great potential to promote the health of people and the planet. My design process is based on current topics and the motives of the urban farming scene, current knowledge about mushroom cultivation and research on sustainable food production. A detailed market research underpins the motivation for this work.
