Exercises in Softness
A Series of Experiments on Material Compounds in the Context of ‘Softness’
Description
The thesis entitled ‘Exercises in Softness’ is an exhibition of experimental objects that explore different facets of the concept of softness. The focus was on experimental approaches to production and connections. The materials used are largely production remnants, B-goods or sponsored materials. The objects on display are snapshots of process and design approaches and can be divided into three categories. The first series is an attempt at an industrial production approach to upholstered sheet metal furniture. In the second series, machined aluminium profiles are given a formal ‘softness’ while exploring new ways of mechanically joining natural stone. The final series is the result of intensive research into the upholstery trade with the aim of developing sustainable and dismountable upholstered furniture using a specially developed joint for leather covers.
