’empath – design begins with empathy’ is an educational format that anchors empathy as a key design competence in design studies. Designers increasingly work in complex social, cultural, and emotional contexts. Empathic understanding is central to responsible design, yet it is often taught unsystematically in education.

Based on scientific findings that empathy can be trained and taught, a modular concept was developed that promotes empathy by enabling students to perceive, reflect, and design empathically.

The foundation consists of practice-oriented workshops, complemented by an accompanying workbook, an Identity Journal, and an AI-supported coach. Together, they form a holistic system that sustainably promotes empathy in studies and beyond in everyday life.
