dementia is a losing game
a homage to my grandma
Description
‘When you’re old, you’re no longer worth anything,’ said my grandma when I visited her in her retirement home. My grandma suffers from dementia, which makes it impossible for her to do what she has done and loved all her life – taking care of the family. My grandma’s forgotten practices and actions due to the disease are slowly turning into confusion. Forgetting what you have done all your life is a terrible idea, but it can lead to completely new realisations. In our capitalist society, a person who is no longer fully functional is often seen as a burden – my grandma, who has spent her whole life using tools that are probably no longer worth much today, feels the same way.
‘Dementia is a losing game’ is an attempt to show the circumstances caused by dementia as valuable events. The project emphasises the sentimental value of these forgotten practices and relics and aims to maintain the connection to my grandma.
