Familiar Encounters in Urban Space
How Far can Art Contribute to Memory Work in Urban Space?
Description
The concept of "Familiar Encounters in Urban Space" was about creating a lively culture of remembrance of the Holocaust between buildings in order to encourage an open dialogue. Personal, pictorial narratives about the Holocaust, in decorative enamel, place the urban space at the centre of the narrative once again. The enamel tiles bring the past of the people of yesteryear into the presence of people of today without triggering too strong emotions. Through de-ritualized memory work, reflection on one's own actions and experiences can take place again. The focus of the design was to understand and break the usual patterns of behaviour. This includes the development of a sense of responsibility that can’t be pushed away or delegated to others. Art and the surrounding architecture politely shake hands and complement each other.
