Design of a Furniture System for Circular Use
Description
In Germany, 1.7 million tons of used furniture are thrown away each year. The large amounts of discarded furniture led me to question whether new business models in the furniture industry could provoke new user behaviours that lead to long-term use and less waste. This master's thesis is an exploration of the challenges and potential that arises from circular usage models for furniture in design practice. Based on research, conversations with experts, and diverse design explorations, a new usage concept for objects and gastronomic and hospitality furniture was developed. The actual design of a modular and adaptable furniture system is based on this concept and accounts for the requirements of circular use and the circular economy. Three prototypes demonstrate the application.
