The Grass is Greener on Both Sides
Make a Wicker Hedge
Description
‘The Grass is Greener on Both Sides’ project is reviving the endangered craft of hedge weaving, where flexible plant shoots are woven together to create a natural barrier. Hedges create habitats with ecological benefits in rural and urban areas. They promote biodiversity, maintain soil fertility by preventing erosion and cool the environment in summer. Wattle hedges have a lifespan of over 100 years, outlasting other fences and making this project part of the ecosystem for generations to come. The system includes tools to enable beginners to create a wattle hedge, but also to help with planning and understanding the technology. These include a simple wooden fence as a framework, a picnic blanket and apron as a guide to weaving, and rubber bands as plant connectors.
