Shear Imagination
The potential of wool as sustainable material in design
Description
Despite its ecological and technical qualities, regional sheep’s wool is now only used to a limited extent — in many places it has been replaced by synthetic materials or is used in markets too small to fully exploit its potential.
Shear Imagination explores this potential in the context of lighting design. A specially developed process enables felt to be freely shaped into sculptural light objects. In the process, the natural properties of the material — warmth, texture, translucency — are reinterpreted in a creative way.
The resulting objects present wool as a functional material with aesthetic and ecological relevance. Local processing opens up new value chains and revitalises existing structures.
The project understands design as a driver for change and positions regional wool as a sustainable alternative to synthetic materials.
