Reviving Traditional Crafts in the Digital Age
A Hybrid Workflow for Footwear Design
Description
This project explores how traditional shoemaking can be revitalized through digital technologies. Using 3D scanning, virtual prototyping, and augmented reality, a hybrid workflow is created that seamlessly connects craftsmanship with modern tools. In collaboration with master shoemaker Korbinian Ludwig Hess, the research demonstrates how digital methods can support, rather than replace, traditional techniques — shaping a future where craftsmanship and innovation coexist harmoniously.
At the heart of this workflow is a digital platform that enables real-time design visualization, material scanning, and AR-based reviews, creating a seamless connection between digital creation and hands-on craftsmanship. The goal is to preserve the artistry of shoemaking while embracing the efficiency and creative potential of new technologies.
This project is not just about designing shoes — it’s about rethinking how we create, collaborate, and ensure that centuries-old skills continue to inspire the future.
