Description

‘we shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us’ (john m. culkin)

the influence of products is omnipresent. the project ‘learning by using’ reveals that this influence extends not only to user behavior but also directly affects their knowledge. for example, navigation systems help users find the right route but negatively impact the natural sense of direction.

the work translates the phenomenon of learning experiences into a theoretical model and derives a design approach that enables designers to create products with added value. the approach consists of six design principles and the learning experience method (lxd method), both of which can be easily integrated into existing design processes. these tools are applied to demonstrators in the project: for example, a calculator through which users learn arithmetic, or a water dispenser designed to foster greater responsibility in the use of water.
