Description

The design of textbooks plays a central role in the educational process. It shapes how learning content is presented and perceived, and significantly influences motivation and learning success. Looking at the German textbook market, however, it becomes apparent that despite the central importance of these media, the visual design of textbooks evolves very slowly and has little to do with how contemporary graphic design shapes our media landscape. This master’s thesis examines the development, function, and design of German textbooks and, based on these findings, develops a design concept for a modern textbook. The practical part applies this concept by redesigning the textbook Terra Geografie 8 from Ernst Klett Verlag. The aim of the work is to demonstrate how much visual design can contribute to textbook development and how well-designed, contemporary educational material can make a difference.
