How ‘Normal’ Are You?
Description
‘Change of View’ is an interactive intervention in public space that creates awareness of surveillance situations through transparency and provides information about current and future video surveillance technologies. Using the example of automated behavioural analysis, people under surveillance are assessed as ‘normal’ or ‘suspicious’. At the same time, human assessments from the control room provide new training data for the real-time training of the neural network. The functionalities of machine learning become tangible, from the generation of training data to the modelling and detection of ‘normality’ and ‘abnormality’. The installation creates a low-threshold and playful access to the functions, opportunities and risks of “intelligent” video surveillance through experience, in order to contribute to an informed social discourse.
